Concert Summary

Standing at 6'4", Albert King - also known as "The Velvet Bulldozer" - was the first great blues musician to ever play the Fillmores, so it is fitting that he join the festivities on the Fillmore East's closing night.

King's influence can be easily recognized in the playing of many of the great 1960s rock guitarists, particularly Mike Bloomfield, Eric Clapton and …entire summary

Terrific guitarist, singer, performer. I saw him at Fillmore West several times, not sure about this show. When he played he really worked and you could see the sweat dripping off his chin. So memorable. Last time I saw him was at a place in Emeryville about a month before he died. Still had the fire though he sat on a stool and smoked his pipe when he played. Thanks, Albert.

I heard Albert King a couple of times at Fillmore West but the best time ever was at a little club in Santa Cruz, CA. Oh man, did he bring out the dancers and the good times.

I had the great fortune to see Mr. King in Chicago -- at either Kingston Mines or Buddy Guy's, I believe -- back in the early 1990's. We sat up front and had the dubious pleasure of watching two dudes in his band try to pick up our women between sets, inviting them (and only them) to a 'party' in their hotel room. Albert came onstage, shot these guys a death-stare I'll never forget and, duly chastened by Mr. King, they sheepishly returned to their instruments. The show? Awesome!! So great that our girlfriends were more offended (well, so they said) then we were.

This is interesting, I guess Cream was playing Born Under a Bad Sign so much he didn't feel the need. Still, it would have been SO COOL!!!

Actually, "Strange Brew" was based nearly note for note on Albert 's "Oh Pretty Woman" solo on the STAX label

Albert King was the first blues show I ever attended, he was at Tulagis on the hill in Boulder Co. in the early 70's. His band included Mike Hollywood Fats, a great guitarist too, and a big female singer named Big Ella. I talked to Albert at the bar before he went on, great show, great blues man.

I saw Albert King on quite a few occasions in Fresno and San Francisco, and the one thing, aside from his guitar playing, that really stood out was his smooth vocal style. Velvet.
