Concert Summary

Scott Muni, acting as this show's emcee, makes a reference to how the audience is about to hear some "real" music just before bringing on Al Di Meola and his solo band for an electrifying showcase of jazz-rock fusion. It is almost as if the announcer is promising the audience redemption for having had to endure corporate rock and disco. Remember, this was 1978 …

Di Meola, a Berklee School of Music graduate whose blistering guitar style married the best elements of rock and jazz, had just left Return to Forever,…entire summary

I saw Al Di Meola in 2008 with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White, his Return to Forever band mates and let me tell you folks Al still has his chops--they all did. Dave McBride

as great as he is as a guitarist, and he is a legend, he is just as nice a person. I was so lucky to have seen him in 1975, at soilders and sailors in pittsburgh. I got to talk to him backstage for a half hour or so,and he was so kind and nice to a starry eyed 14 year old kid who idolized him. i will never forget him, or the music.

I saw Al in the late 70s. He was amazing. He opened up for Weather Report with Jaco Pastorius. As great as Al was, what I remember the most from that night was Jaco. He blew me (and the audience) away with his playing.

I saw them at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium around that time. I'm British, was new to LA, had never heard of Al di Meola, and thought I was being taken to see Weather Report. And looking forward to it. These guys came out and played Casino, and I just couldn't believe what I was hearing. I had no idea such music could be played. When they finished, I stood up, reeling somewhat, to leave and my girlfriend, who had gotten us the tickets, said 'Sit down, Weather Report is coming on next.' I was so out of my head with that unbelievable music, sitting in that fourth row being utterly blown away... They were the SUPPORT band??? Whaa.. Oh yeah, Weather Report! I did my best for Weather Report, but sheesh... I went out next day and bought Casino and I've played it ever since.

It was nice to see the DiMeola, McLaughlin and DeLucia lineup in San Diego in '79, or was it '80? Anyway, everyone there that night will always remember that show, it was crazy-competitive-beautiful. Saw DiMeola last year and he is still the man. Chattanooga, side stage in a festival, still so far ahead in his thinking/playing. Was very approachable with us as well. Can listen to him at all times. Superior listening quality.
