Concert Summary

This recording represents the encore from this evening's performance and, although there are only two selections here - the Mahavishnu Orchestra staple "Meeting of the Spirits" and "Splendido Sundance" from Di Meola's Splendido Hotel - it is still a classic representation of the artistry and talent of each of these guitaritsts. Recorded at Bill Graham's Warfield Theater, the show holds the further distinction that it was held a mere 48 hours before the death of former Beatle John Lennon.

A guitar trio was originally formed in 1979 with McLaughlin, Lucia, and Larry Coryell. …entire summary

I was living in Carmel at the time, I saw The Warfield show advertised in The Pink Section of The Chron. I knew I had to go. I got to see The Mahavishnu Orchestra on their first tour, the opened up for ELP. I had never heard them before and didn't know what to expect. I was totally blown away. I followed Mclaughlin through the years, seening him solo a couple of times. What a treat this show was. Leave it to uncle BOBO to always present the best.

This stuff is of course excellent, but everyone is right about the album SNISF; that night had the magic, the fire, the kavorka! Nights like that are rare enough, but getting them on tape in perfect sound is a real feat. That version of Mediterranean Sundance is one of the most intense acoustic guitar pieces on record.

Run don't walk if you don't have that album; I've heard boots of many nights on that tour but that night is the bomb. This trio is proof that friendly competition makes serious music.

I was fortunate enough to witness one of the "Trio"(Paco DeLucia, John McLaughlin, Al Dimeola)shows in Miami at Gusman Hall(downtown),in 1980.
Needless to say, it was the most amazing acoustic guitar trio I have ever seen! I was working some gigs with a local mobile recording studio(QL Mobile) and we had done a live broadcast(Zeta-4FM) previously at the same theatre with John McLaughlin and Roy Buchanan. We contacted their management to inquire whether we could broadcast the Trio show. Since they had already recorded the SanFrancisco show a few weeks earlier for the eventually released album, they turned us down. Too bad, because everyone I talked with thought the Miami show was better...

Superb example of the depth of expression of the Human Spirit!

What's so infuriating is that they make it sound so easy. Agree with Renaissance post, Brand X were bloody great too, with the excellent Percy Jones (Liverpool Scene)on bass.
