Although the band did score a few hits and forged some definite in-roads as presenters of catchy new wave pop songs, it was hard to ever take them seriously as musicians because of the band's heavy image conscious persona. Started by hairdressers Mike Score and bassist Frank Maudsley, the band was augmented by the additions of Score's brother Ali on drums and Paul Reynolds on guitar to form this initial lineup of A Flock of Seagulls.
This record was made on their first U.S. tour in 1983, just after they had achieved their first considerable success with the heavy MTV rotation of their single "I Ran (So Far Away)" from their self-titled debut album. Focusing on Score and the other band member's bizarre, highly teased hairdos, the video was more about the look of the band than it was about the song itself.
Sadly, this problem would ultimately plague the band in everything they tried to accomplish. They had other minor hits after this tour and album, but by the later half of the 1980s, their popularity had all but waned. The band was reformed some years later for a VH1 reality TV show, Putting the Band Back Together. They still continue to tour, but sadly most of the members have had considerable hair loss since the heyday of this recording.
