Concert Summary

Originally broadcast on WLIR in Long Island for broadcast on the King Biscuit Flower Hour, this recording was done a mere four months before singer Donnie Van Zant would go into mourning over the untimely plane crash death of his brother, Ronnie Van Zant, lead vocalist for Lynyrd Skynyrd. On this night, however, the young Van Zant was riding high as another Southern rock band, fast gaining popularity in America. This show was taped at Long Island's popular rock room, My Father's Place, a venue that helped launch the careers of …entire summary

Yes I absolutely remember the Budweiser toss. Very cool. Can't remember if it was this particular tour or the Wild Eyed Southern Boys tour but Donnie actually was hooked up to rigging and was suspended out over the audience. Pretty impressive to a 17 yr old high school kid back in the day.

I stayed loyal to them up until Strength In Numbers. They lost me after that. It I'm still a fan of the early stuff though. Good memories of a time long gone.

jbgood2864, my thoughts exactly. I saw them in early 1980 when they opened for Rossington-Collins band. I was floored that night and had to find out who these guys were. Remember the cans of Bud and bottle(s) of Jack Daniels tossed into the crowd by Donnie? I was about 20 Feet from the stage and those Peavey amps were screaming (in a good way). I got the third album right away, found their first and then found Special Delivery which is, to me, their finest ever. That album is about great guitar hooks, wonderful song writing and the best studio sound I have ever heard. This album never got any attention. Sadly, I lost interest after Wild Eyed Southern Boys as they were on their way to radio play ad nausium. They lost their edge and their good recorded sound. At least we have some early vids to remember them by.

LOVE this site. Been a 38 Special fan since I heard 'Rockin Into the Night'. Saw them open up for Molly Hatchet on their 'World Disaster Tour' in 1980 and after seeing that show I had to go back and discover what the band was all about. In doing that I found the first 2 albums and they are my all time favorites. 'Special Delivery' in particular. WISH there was a LIVE recording of that tour somewhere out there. But I am so happy to finally get to hear this early music by one of the South's finest bands. More more more...
