2 Live Crew

The groundbreaking and ever-controversial 2 Live Crew are considered the fathers of Gangsta Rap. They raised eyebrows from the moment they released the explicit 1989 record As Nasty As They Wanna Be. The album included the single "Me So Horny" which rock historians note was the start of fervent legal debates on the limit and liabilities of both censorship and freedom of speech in art. The controversies only served to sell more albums and create an opportunity for legal wranglings to be used as promotional vehicles.
