Concert Summary

10,000 Maniacs got their name from a low-budget horror film from the 1960s, called 2,000 Maniacs. The original line-up featured Buck, Drew, Gustafson, Augustyniak, Merchant, and guitarist John Lombardo (who formed the group with Merchant). They emerged from the small town of Jamestown, NY, making areas like Buffalo and Rochester, NY and Cleveland, OH their strongest initial markets.

After signing in 1985 with Elektra, and releasing one LP, The Wishing Chair, Lombardo would depart, unable to continue…entire summary

First, my name is Steven. Second, John Lombardo did not form 10,000 Maniacs. Natalie, Dennis, Robert and I had a band called Still Life in 1981. John's cover band (the Mills) broke up so he joined us that summer and we changed the name to 10,000 Maniacs. Third, we played most of our songs too fast in concert. Natalie was out of breath most of the time from all the dancing. We argued with Lombardo over this all the time. He liked 180 beats per minute. We began to slow our songs down after he left.

This is a rare document of the Maniacs at the peak of their career. Tight, focused, and on their way to international stardom. Merchant at her best. She definitely mellowed after her departure from the band and neither her as a solo act or the revamped Maniacs ever captured the magic they had in the late 80s.

The band sounds like they're in an awful rush to get through the songs. Was this set played as an opening act?

This is a good show for the band but not the best I've heard Natalie Merchant sing. She seems to be slightly off key throughout most of the show. Songs like Lillydale are a little hard to listen, Natalie can barely reach the notes. But all in all it's a good show.
