Concert Summary

This sterling recording of 10,000 Maniacs, made while the band was enjoying its greatest commercial success, has been locked away for nearly 17 years. Recorded at the onset of the band's final tour with singer Natalie Merchant, these tracks were cut two months prior to their taping of MTV's Unplugged, which was among the most successful of CD/DVD releases in that show's history.

Although the world was unaware of it at the time, Merchant had give her bandmates in 10,000 Maniacs a two-year notice at the onset of recording 1992's Our Time In Eden that she was leaving to pursue a…entire summary

10,000 Maniacs...my favorite band of all time. Natalie Merchant is the greatest singer of all time. Live at Berkeley Community Theatre (Berkeley, CA) Feb 17, 1993 is a spectacular display of her incomparable vocals that just effortlessly float above the guys' intricate music craftsmanship. The live performances gave them a chance to stretch out from the confines of the studio, not that they weren't great in both venues.

Anonymous, May 11, 2010 must have been listening through the speakers on his laptop. What a voice!

I remember a critics panning of Tiger Lily for 'inane lyrics' - frankly Natalie could sing the phonebook and out do most popular performers today

Two more things.... It was 1989 when 10,000 Maniacs opened for the Dead, not 1990 as I first mentioned. My memory of those days is a bit fuzzy. Also, the date of this show is incorrect. Right venue, but it's actually from 12/12/92, not 2/17/93.

I've liked 10,000 Maniacs since I saw them for the first time opening for the Grateful Dead in 1990. I have a few of their live recordings from 1989/90 and this one doesn't touch any of those. This band was really all about Natalie... and she wasn't exactly at her best for this show. She's good as always, but this performance doesn't personify how truly incredible she is. Definitely one of the best female singers of all time.

I hear why this was never released - after 5 tracks of flat singing and missed notes - too tedious to listen to...

3rd unknown song is - I'm Beginning to see the Light. Songwriters are Johnny Hodges, Harry James, Don George, and Duke Ellington. Recorded by Bobby Darin, Ella Fitzgerald and others

Natalie's voice is never better than when she has Jerome's drums behind it.

I almost forgot how hauntingly I miss this sound. Thank you.
